VCD Review:
When I first saw this movie, back in the 80's, I loved it.  Now that a lot of time has gone by and I'm older, I watched it again. And I still love it.

To re-arrange one person's very admirable review:

"It takes a very open mind to enjoy this movie.  Akira draws fanatics too bloodthirsty to appreciate its message, and scares away critics intelligent enough to understand it.

All in all, be careful with this movie; it's not for everyone.  Just ignore the hype on BOTH sides (pro and con) and judge for yourself."

While this film condenses a long pre-existing manga (comic book) storyline, the movie's plot may seem "chunked together" at times. The film is filled with gritty violence to appease the blood and guts fans while they have "some morality shoved down their throats".

I purchased the VCD version of Akira because it was not available on DVD at the time.  Now, I have read that a DVD version is being produced.  Well, my copy of the Akira DVD is already pre-ordered.  :)

I would highly recommend this film to any anime fan as well as anyone that thinks Disney animation can't be topped.  The animation equals or exceeds Disney's current BEST.  And this film came out in 1988!

DVD Review:
I just received the Limited Edition Collector's Tin.  I pre-ordered this item as soon as I heard it was going to be available. As it turns out, the Collector's Tin was sold-out before it was even released.

This "Collector's Tin" edition contains two discs.  (Not to mention the fact that the packaging is actually a metal tin!) One disc has the Akira feature with language tracks in both English and Japanese.  It also contains selectable English subtitles.  The second disc is full of filmmaker interviews and artwork that contains both stills from the film and conceptual art from the pre-planning stages.

The audio track for the film is notable, because the English version is BRAND NEW!  The film's audio has totally been redone with a new Japanese-to-English translation and new voice actors!  So, it's like watching a familiar film and hearing a brand new one.

The picture quality is "head and shoulders" above that of my VCD version.  The film negative has been digitally cleaned up to remove scratches and dirt.  The colors are so vivid and rich in this edition.  The picture actually looks BETTER than it would have when the film was brand new (in a theater in 1988).  This feature's picture may be the most vivid, rich and colorful animation work I have ever seen.

This DVD version looks and sounds the way every version of Akira should.  I would highly recommend this version to any and all Akira fans.  I would very highly recommend this title to animation and sci-fi fans, but simply recommend it to everyone else.

(you can view a screenshot comparison between the VCD and DVD versions here.)

This film has been inducted in to the "Movie Hall of Fame" by Matthew C..

Final Thought:

  I still love it.

Plot Synopsis/Description:

A secret military project endangers Neo-Tokyo when it turns a biker gang member into a rampaging psionic psychopath that only two kids and a group of psionics can stop.

"In 1988, the landmark Anime film AKIRA, by director Katsuhiro Otomo, defined the cutting edge of Anime around the world. By today's standards, Akira remains the pinnacle of cel animation and retains the explosive impact of its highly detailed animation and its intensely violent saga of power and corruption. Neo-Tokyo has risen from the ashes of World War III to become a dark and dangerous megalopolis infested with gangs and terrorists. The government seethes with corruption and only maintains a token control over the powerful military that prevents total chaos and hides the secrets of the past. Childhood friends Tetsuo and Kaneda plunge into Neo-Tokyo's darkest secret when their motorcycle gang encounters a military operation to retrieve an escaped experimental subject. Tetsuo, captured by the military, is subjected to experiments that make him a powerful psychic, but, unfortunately for Neo-Tokyo, Tetsuo's powers rage out of control and he lashes out at the world that has oppressed him! Nothing can stop the destructive forces that Tetsuo wields... except possibly the last boy to destroy Tokyo."
