While "SSX Tricky" is a racing game on snowboards, "SSX 3" is a
snowboarding game with racing in it... BIG difference (no pun intended). In general, the
SSX 3
game is almost flawless and incredibly addictive.
Big PLUS +
- The "freeriding" from event to event is a really nice touch.
- SSX 3's "DJ Atomica" is unbelievably better than SSX Tricky's "DJ Rahzel".
- PLENTY of items to collect in-game, over 1000 (art, posters, clothing, toys, trading cards, etc...)
- Real life corporate sponsors (dnL, Element) are a nice touch.
- On a scale of one to ten, this game's replay value is rated at 15.
Big MINUS -
- Snowboards themselves do nothing for your stats. Some just look different, they don't act
any different. (Riding a piece of cardboard is exactly like a surfboard or a skateboard.
Basically, the board you buy for $1,000 works exactly the same as the one you can buy for
$150,000.) [don't make some so freakin' expensive if they don't do
anything for your stats!]
- WAY too many "off limits" areas with absolutely NO indication as to where you
can veer off the course and where you can't. This makes shortcuts VERY VERY hard to find and
ultimately VERY frustrating. (I've NEVER seen so many "off limits" areas considering
GameInformer's early review.)
GameInformer Magazines' Reiner said
"The entire mountain is rendered and every inch of it can be traversed".
Not so. Sorry liar.

However, even though I'm bitching about certain aspects of this game, I LOVE
SSX 3: Out of
Bounds. Make no mistake about it. This is one great game.
SSX 3: Out of Bounds is the greatest sports game ever created for the Nintendo GameCube
system.
(and it may very well be the greatest snowboarding game ever created)

Okay, enough time has past that I think I can objectively talk about this game's "long-lasting
appeal" or "addictive-ness" or whatever.
SSX Tricky was intensely addictive, so I figured whenever its followup looked and
played better then it did, I'd be playing that followup (
SSX 3: Out of Bounds) until
the cows came home. That, however, didn't turn out to be true.
I remember playing
SSX Tricky everyday, because I enjoyed the courses (or tracks or
slopes or whatever you want to call them), but the same isn't true for
SSX 3: Out of
Bounds. The game designers tried to develop courses that felt like a real place. They
tried to develop courses that looked "real" and fit into a "real" environment.
Well, they may have succeeded in that endeavour, but I just don't feel as comfortable in
SSX 3: Out of Bounds' world.
Too bad you can't unlock the entire
SSX Tricky game in
SSX 3: Out of Bounds.
Using the "SSX 3" player movement mechanic on the "SSX 2" courses would
be AWESOME!
By the way, YOU CAN'T DO THAT. I just want to make that clear, I don't want people to "read
anything into" my comments.
Even though this doesn't have the long lasting appeal of
SSX Tricky,
SSX 3: Out of
Bounds is still a GREAT game.

I haven't played this game in years. In hindsight, I think it's fair to say I was addicted to and somewhat
obsessed with this game. I still think this would be a great game to play again. I just can't find it...inexpensively.

You know what, this may be an over-exaggeration, but I think they could package the original "SSX3"
with a bag of crap and I'd buy it again.

Today I just posted a review for GameSpot.com in which I wrote:
I've had plenty of experience with 1080, 1080: Avalanche, SSX Tricky, SSX 3, SSX
On Tour, and SSX Blur. (all snowboarding games) SSX 3: Out Of Bounds is by far the greatest of
the bunch. It stands out among the rest and is an instant classic. I would highly recommend this title to anyone
interested.
Two years ago I wrote this in a review: "In hindsight, I think it's fair to say that I was addicted to and somewhat
obsessed with this game. I still think this would be a great game to play again. I just can't find it...inexpensively. You
know what, this may be an over-exaggeration, but I think they could package the original SSX3 with a bag of crap and

While that is indeed an exaggeration, seven years after its initial availability, I still feel the same.
Final Thought:
