"Ramen Noodles in the Microwave"

by Matthew C.
2008.03.11

Yes, I realize that this is "food" related and therefore out of place in a column about "media", but my comments today have more to do with the packaging than the product. (And the packaging is fair game.)

This afternoon, I was going to make some Ramen noodles for lunch when I discovered that the packaging only had directions for stovetop preparation and not microwave preparation.

Undeterred, I decided to "wing it" and prepare it anyway. Here is my microwave recipe for Ramen noodles at the office.

You will need:
  • Package of Ramen noodles (with packet of seasoning inside)
  • Microwave oven
  • Microwaveable bowl
  • Coffee cup
  • Water
  • Electricity
  • Clean fork (optional)
  1. Take a coffee cup full of WATER and microwave the coffee cup full of water until it is very hot.
  2. Remove the dry noodles and the packet of seasoning from the packaging.
  3. Discard the packaging
  4. Place the noodles in a microwaveable bowl.
  5. Place the packet of seasoning aside for now.
  6. Pour the heated water from the microwaved coffe cup into the bowl with the dry noodles.
  7. Add more water to fill the bowl, if necessary.
  8. Microwave the bowl (full of noodles and water) until the noodles are limp and have absorbed the hot water.
  9. When finished, remove the bowl from the microwave.
  10. Drain ninety to ninety-five percent of the WATER from the bowl. (Alter noodle-to-water-ratio to suit taste.)
  11. Open the seasoning packet and pour over the noodles in the bowl.
  12. Discard the empty seasoning packet.
  13. Stir the noodles and the seasoning until thoroughly mixed (with a clean fork if available).
  14. Eat the noodles (with a clean fork if available).
There you have it. Now you can enjoy Ramen noodles at work for lunch. My preparation DOES NOT effect the extremely high sodium content of such a product, so it's still unhealthy. Enjoy at your own risk.
